Discover How To Build A Wind Turbine

By Jason Moss

Anyone who wants to build a home made wind turbine will be delighted to learn it is not nearly as difficult as one might expect. In fact, it can be done with basic tools and a couple of days work. Anyone living a nomadic life, or on a boat or even somewhere out in the desert and completely off the grid can use a simple wind turbine to generate electricity.

How To Build A Wind Turbine

If anyone is thinking they are not so good with building things they needn’t worry. The basic parts will include a fan and clutch assembly from an old Chevy, a car alternator with a voltage regulator that is built in, a pole to put it on and brackets to mount it.

If someone is building it for an RV they might be able to attach it to the top of the rear ladder. Anyone wanting to use parts from another car maker such as Ford or Dodge is welcomed to do so. It will also be necessary to buy some electric wiring to run from the turbine to the storage batteries.

The blades of the turbine will be fashioned from the fan clutch. It is simply a matter of welding the fan hub to the alternator and making sure it lines up with the shaft. A basic blow torch can be used for the welding.

It is necessary to attach a tail fin to the back of the bracket. To fashion the fin, cut pieces of tin a foot high and two feet long and make them into a triangle shape. Use roofing screws to fasten the tail to the nipple.

Build The Turbine Tower

Commonly, many use a tall television antenna if they have one available or can pick a used one up somewhere cheap. It might still be necessary to place a pole about 3 inches tall on the top. If it is an RV, a pole could be attached to the rear ladder. One of the important things needed are stops that allow the turbine to rotate a full 360 degrees each way without going further than that. If it is allowed to spin around freely then the cord will get twisted around the pole.

After the generator has been assembled and put up it will then be necessary to connect the wiring to the batteries. Once that is completed it should start to charge the batteries which will, in turn, provide free electricity.

Learning how to build a wind turbine is a project anyone can do. It really is not complicated. This is a small generator for electricity but it is useful on its own to run a t.v. or computer. If it is used in addition to solar panels then it is a very nice addition to that. Once someone builds one they can easily build another if it is needed.
